Relocating for Work: Why Latvia, Riga Might Be Your Next Career Destination

Are you considering relocating for work? One country that might not be on your radar but is definitely worth considering is Latvia. Situated in Northern Europe, Latvia is a small yet beautiful country with a rich cultural history and a booming economy. Its capital Riga has both the bustling energy of a big city and the charming feel of a small town with beautiful views everywhere you look.

Aside from its rich cultural history, Riga is a vibrant and dynamic city that is quickly becoming a hub for international business. It has a lively nightlife scene and lots of cultural events and it’s a real foodie paradise with many restaurants, cafes, and bars serving local and foreign foods that are delicious.

In just 30 minutes from the city centre, you can find yourself at the beach, in forests, and breathing in fresh sea air. The landscapes are breathtaking, and it's a great way to relax after work.

To learn more about what it’s like to relocate to Latvia, we spoke to Linas, a Customer Support Specialist at Transcom who made the move from Lithuania to Latvia.

When asked about what motivated him to choose Transcom and relocate to Latvia, Linas says, "There was no singular specific motivator at the time. I had the experience of living abroad for a long period of time and had no issues with doing that again. Riga seemed like a wonderful choice and is not that far from home for me. It did not disappoint."

Transcom's relocation package was of great benefit

One of the biggest concerns when moving abroad for work is the preparation required, both personally and professionally. That’s why at Transcom we offer support to make the transition as smooth as possible. This includes providing you with a relocation package that covers expenses related to the move, including flight tickets, temporary housing and transportation.

"The only preparation I did was pack my travel bag. Transcom’s relocation package included a promise of all required help of setting up in Riga so I trusted them and the promise was kept without fail. Searching for an apartment here took a bit longer than expected, but with the help from a relocation specialist, everything worked out well in the end," says Linas.

Upsides and cross-cultural contrasts

According to him, relocating for work can be a life-changing experience, and Latvia offers a wealth of benefits for those seeking a new adventure. Among the many advantages of relocating to Latvia is the opportunity to immerse oneself in a new culture and way of life. "I was able to meet many wonderful people, live in a beautiful city centre, and found a few favourite spots to spend my time at. There are plenty of wonderful places to visit here in Latvia."

Linas suggests that culture shock should be expected regardless of where you come from. However, he emphasizes the importance of having an open mind and being adaptable to new cultures, whether they are related to the country or the workplace.

"Even if you are from a somewhat culturally close country, you will still manage to encounter something that will be weird. You should be willing to adapt to a new culture, be it the country or office's culture. You should not fear reaching out to someone for a little bit of support. Adaptability would be the core quality when relocating," he adds.
